President’s Message: September 2015

Greetings Homebrewers,

I’m writing the monthly president’s message a bit early this month as I will be out of town on a cruise from the 18th through the 25th. Never fear though! I should be returning (hopefully with a tan) in time for the Museum Brew Ha-Ha on September 26th and the monthly club meeting on the 30th. The Evansville Museum has called on us for help serving and we need more servers! Even if you don’t have any beer to donate to the event, if you have valid Indiana server’s license we could sure use some help for this one! And if you have beer to donate that’s even better! Just some details, the Museum Brew Ha-Ha is an indoor event, we are planning on meeting at Turonis at 4:00pm to load up on the 26th. The event runs from 6-10pm. I have been told there will be a “Best Beer of the Fest” award that will be voted on by the event attendees so here is your chance to get some bragging rights and maybe a trophy!

The SWIRCA and More Brewfest was again a blazing success for our club. We did had some minor issues with set up (people showing up at the fest instead of at Turonis to help load) and some issues with our equipment (some quick connects had been removed from the air tanks). Our veteran beer fest workers along with some good ole’ homebrewer MacGuyver-ing got everything straightened out just in the nick of time, and once those minor issues were taken care of it was smooth sailing from there on out. We had around 20-25 different beers to serve (which were all of exceptional quality I might add) and like usual our station was a festival favorite. The third quarterly OVHA social night was held at the Gerst Haus September 12th. I have really appreciated these opportunities to get away from the busy and noisy club meetings and beer festivals to spend some time with other club members, friends, and family enjoying some fine beers and conversation. The next and last OVHA quarterly social night will be tentatively held at Turonis Saturday, December 5th at 4pm so mark your calendars now!

The theme of the September club meeting is “Homebrewing Swap Meet”. A Swap Meet is defined as “a gathering at which enthusiasts or collectors trade or exchange items of common interest.” The idea is we all have homebrewing related things that we may not use anymore but that someone else may want. So bring the stuff you don’t want, be it your old mash tun before you switched to brew in a bag, your brew in a bag before you switched to mash tun, carboys you don’t use, extra pbw, brewing related clothing you don’t wear anymore, brewing books you’re not going to read again, extra tubing, those gadgets you just had to build but only used once, and so forth and we can trade swap or sell all this stuff to each other. I think this is a fun idea and I know that we all accumulate tons of homebrewing stuff that’s just filling our basements and closets and garages that we never use.

After SWIRCA our next brew fest will be the Wesselman’s Woods Wandering Owl beer and wine trail October 28th from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This is a really nice event and I really like this one. Tickets are $50.00 per person and they always have excellent food, a camp fire, and live music. After that we have the annual AHA Learn to Homebrew Day November 7th which we voted on keeping at the last meeting and then the Holy Redeemer Tap and Cork event on November 14th.

I hope to see you all at the Wednesday meeting, don’t forget to bring your canned good!

Cheers

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: AUGUST 2015

Greetings Homebrewers,

For this month’s President’s message, let’s talk turkey, or Big Turkey to be exact. The Big Turkey contest is an OVHA tradition that started way back in 2007 as a fun and friendly competition open to all OVHA members. This year for the 9th annual Big Turkey competition there will be 2 categories: 2008 BJCP Category 12 Porter, and Category 14 IPA. This includes subcategories: Brown Porter, Robust Porter, Baltic Porter, English IPA, American IPA, and Imperial IPA. The rules are brewers may only enter each subcategory once. Each entry will consist of 2 – 12 ounce capped bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels and embossing. Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely. Completed entry forms must be submitted with all entries, and can be printed directly from the OVHA website. Entry forms should be attached to bottles with a rubber band only; glue and/or tape are unacceptable. The drop off deadline for entries will be the November 18th meeting and the awards ceremony will take place at the OVHA Christmas Party. Places will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Judges will be using the standard BJCP judging sheets used at all the AHA competitions and styles will each be judged within their own subcategory. The grand prize will be the opportunity to be “Pro-Brewer for a Day” at Carson’s Brewery. We will also have a club-wide tapping party when the beer is ready. Also, first place will get their name on the Big Turkey trophy, receive one year’s free OVHA membership, and get a Big Turkey ceramic stein. Other prizes to be announced. Should you have any questions or comments, Vice President Kenny Purcell is the event coordinator for the Big Turkey competition. I hope everyone is brewing for the big turkey, I know I am!

Next up let’s talk about the SWIRCA and More Brewfest on August 29. The event is 6:00-9:00, with VIP hour starting at 5:00 at Bosse Field. So far it’s looking to be another outstanding showing by the club. I counted around 29 beers committed and 18 servers volunteered! Just as a reminder, in order to serve at an OVHA sanctioned event, each server must have on their person a current server’s license and a copy of the certificate for completion of the Indiana Server Training Program. This will be checked before the event starts. And remember, while we are at SWIRCA we are all OVHA ambassadors so remember to have fun, be safe, and be on your best behavior (no streaking the ball field please)!

The next quarterly OVHA social night will be at the Gerst Haus 2100 W Franklin St on September 12th at 4pm. If you haven’t been to one of these the quarterly social nights are a really fun event and a nice opportunity to meet with club members, friends, and family in a non-club casual atmosphere. I have really enjoyed going to the social nights and seeing club members in a social setting away from the sometimes noisy club meetings and beer fests, and I hope they continue to be as popular as they have been in the future.

And lastly, the next brew fest event after SWIRCA will be the Evansville Museum Brew Ha-Ha September 26th, then Wesselman’s Woods Wandering Owl beer and wine trail on October 28th.

I hope to see you all at the Wednesday meeting, don’t forget to bring your canned good, and I promise not to forget the microphone this month!

Cheers

President’s Message: July 2015

Fellow home brewers,

Important news!! This month the July meeting will be held a week early on Wednesday, July 22nd at the usual time of 7pm due to Volksfest occurring when we normally meet.

Earlier this year the club asked for three brave members to volunteer to brew the same beer kit using the 3 most popular brewing methods: brew in a bag, traditional mashtun, and extract. They all 3 brewed at the same place on the same day and left the fermenters in the same temperature controlled fermentation chamber for consistency. At the July meeting we will be doing a blind tasting of these three beers and we will vote on which beer we think tastes the best. Finally, we will put an end to the debate on which method is undisputedly the best. Right? RIGHT!?!?

A few weeks ago the Indiana State fair held its 17th annual Indiana Brewers Cup competition at the Indiana state fair ground in Indianapolis and the OVHA was there! The orange shirt army made a solid appearance with volunteers to steward and judge 802 homebrew and 500 professional brewery entries. That’s a lot of beer to drink in two days but we gave a valiant effort! After the judging sessions ended on Saturday there was a tasting event where the club set up our jockey box and new OVHA signage to serve club beer. As usual our beer was excellent and a good time was had by all. Even though no members placed this year we still got some really good feedback on the beers we entered (I am pleased my Belgian IPA got a 38, the clubs barrel beer from last year got a 41, and my Pliny clone got a 35) from an expert panel of beer judges and professional brewers. I would like to give a big congratulations to Carson’s Brewery for getting a silver medal in the American Ale category for Red Dawn, a Silver Medal in the Smoke and Wood Aged Category for the Bourbon Barrel Foreign Extra Stout, and a Silver medal in the Specialty beer category for Sinner. Also, congratulations to Tin Man who got a gold medal in the fruit beer category for their Wired White IPA.

The SWIRCA & More Beer fest is coming up fast! August 29th at Bosse field from 6pm-10pm one of the area’s largest craft beer festivals will be held and, as usual, the OVHA will be making another strong appearance. So far we have around 20 kegs of beer committed which means there is still plenty of room to get your beers in if you would like to donate. Bottles and growlers are also accepted. This is a really unique event that supports a great cause and in the past we have served for the distributors as well as our club, so we will need lots of volunteers with server’s licenses on this one. There will be a sign up sheet at the July meeting and we will also have a signup thread on the OVHA website member board.

And lastly, looking forward on the calendar we will be having another OVHA social night Saturday September 5th at the Gerst Haus. The next brew fest event after SWIRCA will be the Evansville Museum Brew Ha Ha September 26th, then Wesselman’s Woods Wandering Owl beer and wine trail on October 28th. Don’t forget the big turkey styles this year are porter and IPA. I need to start working on my recipe! Don’t forget to bring a canned good to the meeting.

Keep on brewing!

President’s Message: June 2015

Fellow Homebrewers,

The month of June has flown by so fast for me that I can’t believe it’s almost over! I’d like to personally thank everyone who contributed to the Mesker Zoo Brew this year. It was truly the best Zoo Brew we have ever had as a club and I am really astonished by how much our club has grown. We donated somewhere around 35 different beers to sample and had a solid 26+ volunteers there to help! This is the most we have ever contributed and participated to an event in the history of our club and I am so very grateful to be a part of it. I hope we can make the upcoming events which are the Indiana Brewers Cup and SWIRCA just as special. As a reminder, it is critical that if you would like to serve at one of these events you must have a valid Indiana server’s license. Indiana law requires ANY and ALL persons dispensing alcoholic beverages to possess a valid ATC employee permit and you must produce said permit on demand of an Indiana excise officer. Any violation of this could cause the event permit to be revoked. According to Indiana law it is illegal to give away an alcoholic beverage without a permit. I strongly recommend all club members to obtain a servers permit. It is extremely easy to obtain, just go to http://www.in.gov/atc/2641.htm

For the June club meeting tech topic the subject will be feral fermentation with John Dippel. Have you ever wondered how beer was fermented in the old days before brewers had White Labs, Wyeast, and all the other great yeast manufacturers we have today? John Dipple will show us how to collect and propagate wild yeast and what to expect during fermentation. This will be a tech topic that all you brettanomyces funk freaks (myself included) won’t want to miss!

I hope everyone who wanted to get their beer entered in the Indiana Brewer’s cup was able to register in time because the homebrew category is closed! I want to give Jeremy Dunn a HUGE thank you for volunteering to drive our entries up to Indianapolis. For new members or those that don’t already know Jeremy Dunn won a gold medal in the Indiana Brewer’ cup last year for his Belgian Strong entry. Once again I am amazed by the dedication and willingness to volunteer of our club members. To everyone who has an entry, good luck! This is one of my favorite weekends of the year and if you have never been to the brewer’s cup I strongly recommend you consider volunteering at http://www.in.gov/statefair/fair/contests/2560.html. The brewer’s cup has been called “The Super Bowl of Homebrewing competitions” by some people and I can guarantee those that attend will not be disappointed. I have a feeling this year we are going to shine more than ever and maybe even give our friendly rival club, those Foam Blowers of Indiana, a run for their money!

The next Evansville beer event is the SWIRCA & More Brewfest on August 29th at Bosse Field. The event is 7-10pm with a VIP hour starting at 6pm. I expect this to be another record setting event for our club. For those that don’t know, SWIRCA stands for South Western Indiana Regional Counsel of Aging and is a non-profit organization serving seniors, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. SWIRCA & More Case Managers serve 5,000 adults and children providing over 30,000 hours of direct client services each year and offer services like home delivered meals, respite, Structured Family Care-Giving, repairs that directly correct and/or prevent health and safety hazards for the elderly or disabled individual to enable them to remain safely in the community setting, and so much more. I feel very strongly about SWIRCA and the support they provide and I love that our club donates their beer and time to support this cause each year. So get those brew pots fired up and get to brewing!

Cheers!

President’s Message: May 2015

Fellow Homebrewers,

For the May tech topic the subject will be brew gadgets! The homebrewing movement was founded on DIY principles, and home brewers are known for that awesome DIY ingenuity. I know in the past I have been amazed at some of the cool things that our club members have made. Homebrewing has taught many of us to be creative and to view the physical world in a different way. We look at ordinary things and think, “I could make something for brewing out of that.” So this Wednesday, we are encouraging all you MacGyvers out there to bring your coolest brew gadgets to the meeting to show off. The club will have some tables set up to display your gadgets. Bonus points awarded if you print out anything from the internet that you used to build it or if you have a print out to pass out that explains how to make your gadget.

Earlier this month on May 2nd our club participated in AHA National Homebrew Big Brew Day. OVHA members and friends came together to brew in the sunshine at the parking lot at the CYO Homebrew Supply Store at 116 E. Franklin Street and a good time was had by all. It was a tremendously successful event and a beautiful day. I’d like to give a big thank you to Drew Mitchell at CYO for hosting it. If you didn’t make it out, don’t worry, we will have another remote brew towards the end of the year for national learn to homebrew day.

As I write this, the club’s three way brew off contest is underway at the Gonzalez house. Three of our club’s brewers have graciously volunteered to brew the same beer recipe kit using three different popular brewing methods as a fun experiment on different brewing methods and their final outcome. They will be testing the extract method, brew in a bag, and traditional mash method all on the same recipe, to be fermented in the same place, at the same fermentation temperature, with the same yeast. At a later meeting all three batches will be compared side by side in a blind tasting by us and a vote will be held on which method made the best tasting beer.

Zoo brew is coming up fast! Zoo brew takes place on Saturday, June 6, from 6-9 p.m. at the Mesker Zoo and Botanical gardens. The Zoo Brew is a highly anticipated happening that will be fun for all who attend! The evening will consist of beer and wine samples, great food, live music, and fun entertainment, all taking place on Zoo grounds. As usual, we will be participating in the Zoo Brew. As a participant, we will set up a tasting booth during the event to provide a 2 oz. sample of our finest homebrews to Zoo Brew attendees. So far we have 25 volunteers, 23 kegs and some bottles committed to the event. The zoo has asked us to set up and be ready to serve by 5pm for the VIP ticket holders, so we are planning on meeting at Turonis Main Street Brewery around 3-3:30pm that day to load up our equipment before heading to the zoo. I want to give a big thanks to Dan Mills for volunteering his trailer for the event, and to Turonis brewer Josh Petrowski for letting us store our draft cart at Turonis and committing to giving it a good once over cleaning the night before the Zoo brew! I will be organizing a serving schedule in the next few days. Once it is finished I will post it on our website. A server’s license is required to serve at this event so if you have signed up to serve be sure to double check your license and make sure it is up to date. Everyone’s server’s license will be checked the day of the event.

And lastly, the Indiana Brewers cup is set to start accepting entries on June 1st. Last year some members had an issue with getting their entries registered because there are only so many entries allowed and the spots were taken up fast, so this year if you are planning on entering beer I encourage you to be ready to submit next Monday June the 1st. To enter into the Indiana State Fair, please go to www.indianastatefair.com and enter online. Go to: Competitions > Indiana Brewers’ Cup> Online Entry and follow the prompts. No entries will be accepted after June 26, 2015 or sooner if the cap of 1,300 entries is reached (800 Home Brew and 500 Professional Brew) which it most certainly will be reached very quickly. To ensure participation, do not wait until the last minute to register. Each exhibitor is required to pay a $10 entry fee at the time of entry. Payment can be made online with a valid credit card. Each entry must consist of three (3) unmarked bottles, 12 ounces in volume, brown or green glass.

Cheers!

President’s Message: March 2015

Fellow Homebrewers,

It looks like spring is finally here to stay and that means brewing season has officially begun for us outdoor brewers! I can’t believe how fast March has flown by. So many exciting brewing events are all just around the corner starting with the annual club big barrel brew next Saturday the 28th at Carson’s Brewery. Once again Liquor Locker has graciously donated a fine oaken bourbon barrel to the club for us to fill with the finest beer we can brew. This year it’s a Jefferson’s Ocean barrel and we will be brewing a chocolate coffee stout. Yum! A big thank you again goes out to Jason Carson for hosting the event and John Mills for all of his assistance. We are very fortunate to have a place to brew inside as a club with a ready supply of hot liquor water available. All the ingredients are ready and John has even offered to mill the grain for us.

Other great events just around the corner are: The Bloomington craft beer festival April 11, Upland’s Up Cup (which yours truly will be judging this year) April 25, National Homebrew day May 2, Zoo brew June 6, then the Brewer’s Cup July 10 and 11. It is all coming up so fast!

The first quarterly club social night was a smashing success at Carson’s. No official head count was taken (everyone was too busy socializing) but the turnout was great. I’d like to thank all who attended. It was nice to relax with everyone outside the club in a social setting. Thank you to everyone who brought food. I had a blast! The next club social night will be June 13 at Tin Man. Be there or be square!

We have another great tech topic planned for the March meeting. Michael Julian, our resident tech wizard and webmaster, will be giving a presentation on BeerSmith, a very popular software program that helps brewers design great beers, match popular beer styles from around the world, manage recipes, generate step-by-step brewing instructions and perform dozens of brewing calculations with ease. For me Beersmith is an essential tool for homebrewing and I can’t imagine life without it. I have read in the “Designing Great Beers” book on how to formulate recipes and calculate the gravity and IBU’s by hand and let me tell you, those old timer’s had it rough! For those of you out that that listen to podcasts, Brad Smith, the creator of BeerSmith, has an excellent podcast that I listen to and strongly recommend.

As a reminder, please continue to bring those canned goods to every meeting. I have been floored by the amount of support and enthusiasm our club has shown for this cause. I know it can be a minor inconvenience to remember to bring another thing to every meeting (trust me, carrying them down the stairs and driving them to the donation drop off place hasn’t been easy for me either) but we are really making a difference is someone’s life out there and I am very proud of the generosity our club has shown.

So, everyone dust off those kettles, break out the burners and get to brewing while the weather’s nice, and I’ll see you Wednesday at the meeting!

Cheers

President’s Message: February 2015

Fellow Homebrewers,

I hope everyone is staying warm this month in the wake of winter storm Octavia, it looks like that darn groundhog got us again! It can be hard for us outdoor brewers in these winter months. I am an outdoor brewer, and with my brewery blanketed under a layer of snow and temperatures in the single digits as I write this, I find my attention shifting from brewing outside to tinkering inside. My kegerator improvements have been completed, the hop infuser has gone through its first initial test rounds, my brew space have been tidied, and all the beer has been bottled and kegged. I think it might be time for another extract batch on the stove soon!

My journey to become a full-fledged BJCP judge has finally come to an end. I received my exam results back this month and I am now officially part of the BJCP! It took seven long and anxious months of waiting but I think it was worth it. The purpose of the Beer Judge Certification Program is to: Encourage knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the world’s diverse beer, mead, and cider styles; Promote, recognize, and advance beer, mead, and cider tasting, evaluation, and communication skills; and Develop standardized tools, methods, and processes for the structured evaluation, ranking and feedback of beer, mead, and cider. I’d like to encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a BJCP judge to take the plunge.

Remember, at the February meeting we will be taking our annual club photo. Make sure your membership dues are paid up, and don’t forget your orange shirt! We will have a fresh batch of orange shirts including ladies cut for sale at the meeting if you are in need of an OVHA shirt.

As a reminder, starting at this February meeting we are asking all members to bring one canned good in order to receive a ticket for the door prize. I know it may be a mild inconvenience to some of us to remember to have to bring one more thing to each meeting but I really feel that a club our size has a responsibility to the community and that this is going to make a positive difference in someone’s life. I want to thank everyone for being so generous in contributing to this cause; you all never cease to amaze me!

Save the date! March 28th we are holding our annual OVHA “Big Barrel Brew” at Carson’s Brewery. The recipe we will be brewing has yet to be decided so if you have a recipe you think would age great in a bourbon barrel please reach out to one of your board members.

And finally, the results are in! This year the Big Turkey contest was held to a vote and your voices were heard! We will have two categories and.. drum roll please… the two categories will be: Category 12 Porter, and Category 14 India Pale Ale. These will include sub categories 12A Brown Porter, 12B Robust Porter, 12C Baltic Porter, 14A English IPA, 14B American IPA, and 14C Imperial IPA.So get those mashtuns heated up and dust off the bottle capper, it’s going to be a good competition this year!

Cheers!

OVHA Barrel Brew Getting a Big Salty Kiss!

Well, it looks like this years bourbon barrel is going to be a Jefferson’s Ocean barrel! A big thanks to past president

Here is an article that Sky posted from USA Today

Ocean-kissed bourbon gains cult following

Jeff Smith for coordinating the procurement of the barrel. This brew looks like it is turning in to  something special.

If you are interested in brewing a batch to help fill the barrel please head over to the OVHA forum and add you name to the list.

President’s Message: January 2015

Fellow Homebrewers,

Another amazing and exciting year of home brewing is upon us! Every New Year’s Eve I make a resolution to brew more beer the next year and to improve upon my brewing equipment and knowledge of brewing. I plan on improving my kegerator, making a beer infuser, and maybe dabbling in mead. I hope all of us can make our own “brew year resolutions” come true.

Your elected club officials and I are planning lots of awesome things for us to do this year. I don’t want to give away all the surprises but there are talks of another club outing! We are also planning another big barrel brew at Carson’s (a big thanks to John Mills for hosting last year), and our own club hosted brewing competition. This year we are also going to try something new that some other clubs have done and that is to have a quarterly “Club Social Night” where we can meet outside of official club events with our friends and families to partake in some good old fashion socializing.

At the January meeting Drew Mitchell of CYO Brewing will be speaking about the new dedicated brew shop he has opened in Evansville and the brewery he is planning. I know that I, for one, am thrilled to have a dedicated home brewing store open in Evansville and I can’t wait to hear what he has to say. Also, Phil Johnson, Brewmaster at the Pour House in Tell City, will be speaking about his experience with the UC Davis brewing science program. We will also be having a vote to decide what beer styles (that’s right, more than one!) the big turkey brewing contest will be this year so be sure to make it to the meeting in order to get your votes cast. At the meeting we will be drawing names for a three-way extract, brew-in-a-bag, and conventional mashtun brewing experiment to finally put an end to the debate on which process is the best. Or we will find out there is no difference. Either way we are sure to have some fun! So if you want to be one of the brewers you will want to get your name in the hat before we draw!

As our club continues to grow I strongly believe it becomes more important to give back to our community, and so this year we have decided to ask that starting in February, all club members bring one canned good to every meeting in order to get a ticket for the door prizes. We have sent our own club treasurer Jack Frey to CYO to pick up some new goodies for the door prizes so remember, don’t forget your canned good starting in February! Later in the year we will also be holding a drive for old eyeglasses. If you feel strongly about a particular charity and have an idea for our club to contribute please contact me or one of the board members.

Don’t forget, the start of the New Year means it’s time to renew your membership dues on the OVHA website. It’s those dues that allow us the ability to have special guests and rare beers and prizes. Next month is the annual club group photo, so be sure to get your dues paid so you can be in the picture.

Cheers!

December President’s Message

President Jeff Smith

Fellow Homebrewers,

It’s hard to believe that another year is almost behind us. Let’s take a quick look back at 2014.

We had several guests presenters in 2014. We started the year with a beer and chocolate pairing from a certified cicerone. I believe we set a record for the number of significant others in attendance. At the March meeting Caleb Staton, head brewer at Bloomington’s Upland Brewing, led the club in a sampling of Upland’s 2014 sour beer release. In October Aimee Blume brought her considerable culinary talents to the OVHA. We enjoyed some incredible fare prepared with beers from Carson’s Brewery.

With an eye on a future open homebrew competition, we placed an emphasis on beer judging in 2014 by conducting quarterly calibration tastings. Michael Julian was the first guinea pig having his Vienna Lager compared to a commercial version of the style. Kenny Purcell followed three months later with his hoppy American Wheat pitted against Carson’s Eville Wheat. Yours truly then put forth a rather pedestrian Scottish Ale, the style for this year’s Big Turkey Competition. Finally, Cesar Gonzalez, a past Indiana Brewers Cup blue ribbon winner, presented his Munich Dunkel. Thanks so much to those willing to subject their creations to public scrutiny.

Members gathered three times in 2014 to brew publicly. In early March, members met at Carson’s for the 2014 barrel brew day and produced 110 gallons of wort. Ultimately, half of the Foreign Extra Stout went into a Four Roses bourbon barrel donated by Liquor Locker. The first Saturday in May saw about a dozen brewers celebrating Big Brew in the parking lot of Tin Man. Six months later three hardy souls and several interested observers braved less than ideal conditions at the Morgan Avenue Liquor Locker for Learn to Homebrew Day.

As always, the OVHA was instrumental in the success of several beer festivals benefiting local not-for-profits. Zoo Brew kicked of the season in June as the OVHA, with around 25 beverages on tap, took its customary spot by the Mesker Zoo entrance.   Bosse Field next welcomed the club for the long-standing SWIRCA brew festival. This was followed by the Evansville Museum’s Brew Ha Ha and Wesselman Wood’s Wandering Owl. The festival season concluded last month with Holy Redeemer’s Tap and Cork. Thanks to those who selflessly contributed your time and beer to these worthy events.

Several OVHA members competed in the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition with Chris Norrick’s Flanders Red and the Gonzalez’ cider advancing to the final round. The finals were judged during the National Homebrewers Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan.   The club was well-represented at this year’s conference as I was joined by Amelia, Cesar, Chris, and last year’s OVHA president, Don Heisler. Aside from one rookie mistake, a great time was had by all attendees.

As it does every year, an army of orange shirts descended on he 2014 Indiana Brewers Cup with many OVHA members volunteering to steward and judge.   With his Belgian Golden Strong, Jeremy Dunn brought home the top prize in his category. Carson’s and Tin Man also took home a fair share of hardware. Clearly, the future of Evansville brewing, both on the amateur and professional levels, is in good hands.

As you can see, 2014 was a very busy year. We added 29 new members and we currently have more than 120 members in good standing making the OVHA one of the most prominent homebrewing clubs in Indiana. All of this could not have been possible without the tireless efforts and sacrifices of your OVHA officers and directors. When you get a chance, please give a pat on the back to Sky, Chris, Jack, Jill, Michael J., Kenny, Dutch, and Dwayne.

Thanks to all for making my tenure as OVHA president a memorable one. Now, bring on the year of the Sky!

Just Brew It!

Jeff
