Trying to fine tune my grain mill and wanted to see what everyone has their gap set to. After brewing at Carsons this weekend, I feel as if my gap is to tight. I believe mine is set to .037

The small mill at Carson's is set to .039. I have not done a sieve test on it to determine if crush is right. Just going off of visual. The large mill is set at .058. Sieve analysis is excellent with 73% course, 11% medium, 11% fine, and 5% flour.

Thanks for the info John! So tell me, why is the big mill using such a large gap compared to the small mill?

They're totally different rollers. The small mill is a 1" knurled roller, and the large is an 8-10" spiral cut roller.
The big mill is vastly superior on consistency of crush. I guess the easy answer is $200 mill vs $15k mill.

$200? I'd say more like $160 :)

I messed around with the gap on my mill after researching and helping John tune his big mill. I used to run mine @ .35 to .40 but have since opened it up to .45. We found a really good artical (I will try to find it) that Rock Bottom did on gapping their mills. The end result was "go as big on the gap as possible". The only way to do this correctly is to sieve the grain.

I just opened mine up until I was getting uncracked husks and then closed it up by .05.
