Swollen hop packaging

Post by Blancaster » Tue Aug 19, 2014 8:26 pm

Ok so I bought these hops at the coop a few weeks ago. Threw them in the freezer like I always do till ready to use them. I went to take inventory and found it swollen like a balloon! I called Hop Union to see if they were still ok to use. They could not answer my questions and directed me back to the coop. Has anyone had this happen to them? Are these hops still good? Or should I just ross them?

I try my damnest not to by hops from the coop because of the refrigeration deal. I would open them up and see how fresh they smell. As long as they smell fresh and NOT like old cheese I would problely use them...

I've never seen a hop union bag do that before.. is there a leak in the bag or are the contents of the bag releasing gas? Either way, what Michael said, I would open them up and smell them, if the smell good I would use them as long as its in the boil and not drop hopping, if they smell like old cheese I would take them back to the coop, show them that picture and ask to exchange them..

You have to watch out for hops raised on Mexican food.

They do flush the package with nitrogen before sealing it up. Maybe the sudden change in temp caused he gas to expand a little and swell the bag??
