2014 BJCP STYLE GUIDELINES OVERHAUL

Gordon Strong, president of the BJCP has announced at the national home brewer conference a major overhaul to the BJCP style guidelines will be released by the end of the year. Here is a link to a PDF showing the changes to be made.

Yea, kind of frustrating for me since I've spent the better half of the year studying and memorizing the current guidelines. I think all the changes are great though

Gordon Strong was a proctor at the BJCP tasting exam I took today in Cincinnati. They said we wont know how we did on the test for at least three months at the minimum

I got an email back today about my BJCP tasting exam that I took back in July. They say they finished the preliminary grading last week and sent it to the associate director and exam director to complete and that I will "get your results by the end of the year, or maybe early January. Currently, there is a severe shortage of graders, especially lead graders, and graders often have problems getting the exam sets in on time. So, wait times of 5+ months are common."


The exam grading process is pretty detailed and can be reviewed here if anyone is interested in it

How come I was not surprised to see a Gnatt chart at the end of the grading process... Damn computer engineers.

I just got my BJCP tasting exam results back from the exam I took July 19th. I got an 80!

Style Guideline Status Update

The release of the new style guidelines has been delayed while we complete the final editing and review. We intended to release them by the end of 2014, primarily to allow the AHA NHC to use them in the upcoming season. However, the AHA informed us in November 2014 that they intended to continue to use the 2008 guidelines for the 2015 NHC, so that removed an artificial deadline.

Since the last update, we have completed the internal review, and are now incorporating updates from a second external review. We are also expanding some sections to address comments we have received. Obviously, the name 2014 is moot at this point, so the new guidelines will be called the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines, and should be released by the end of March 2015.

The current guidelines remain in effect for exams and competitions. The same guidance as previously released applies to exams. We will allow at least a 6 month transition period before they will be in effect. A more detailed guidance statement will be released by the Exam Directorate after the guidelines are released. We will still need assistance at that time to translate and format the guidelines into additional versions.

So cream ale and American wheat were moved from category 6 light hybrid to category 1 which was renamed from "Light Lager to "Standard American Beer

There are now 34 beer categories instead of 23

Category 21 IPA now has Belgian IPA, black ipa, white ipa, rye ipa, brown ipa, and red ipa!

Category 27 "historical beers" has gose and Kentucky Common!

This is really exciting!
